In Labyrinth we have two stories, one set in Carcasonne in the 13th century, and another set in modern day, in the same area, involving a discovery in a long abandoned, hidden cave.
This book should have been a cracking adventure, but I found it fairly heavy going, particularly the 'modern day' story. The parts set in the 13th century were interesting, and had more developed characters, and a better story, weaved around true events of the time, but I found myself skimming through parts ... Labyrinth is obviously the first "real" novel put out by Kate Mosse. By "real" I mean that it's obviously her first entry that has been widely published. The book is well written, but it stumbles a lot as it goes along & some readers will find it too much work (not in a good way) to keep up with the dual plotlines & multiple characters.

I was looking forward to reading this book for so long, and unfortunately I was disappointed. The narrative is so confusing! For the first 75% of the novel I was struggling to make sense of what was going on. It is one thing to try to create suspense, but it is entirely another thing to leave the reader in suspense of what is happening for over half of the book! Only towards the end did the novel start to become more descriptive in what was actually happening and who all the people were.

An engrossing thriller that consists of two tales - one set in modern day France and one in medieval France. The two female protagonists seem to share a spiritual connection of some kind.. The story is basically another one about the search for the mythical holy grail of Christianity and as just that is not an extraordinary one. This is not a light-reading fiction novel. There are at least 2 story lines being told simultaneously from beginning to end, and about 20 named characters you have to keep straight (i guess about 10 main characters). However, with its complexity it is quite enjoyable, and you just might learn a few french and occitan words along the way.
