Product Description: July 2005. In the Pyrenees mountains near Carcassonne, Alice, a volunteer at an archaeological dig, stumbles into a cave and makes a startling discovery-two crumbling skeletons, strange writings on the walls, and the pattern of a labyrinth.
Eight hundred years earlier, on the eve of a brutal crusade that will rip apart southern France, a young woman named Alais is given a ring and a mysterious book for safekeeping by her father. The book, he says, contains the secret of the true Grail, and the ring, inscribed with a labyrinth, will identify a guardian of the Grail. Now, as crusading armies gather outside the city walls of Carcassonne, it will take a tremendous sacrifice to keep the secret of the labyrinth safe.

I was looking forward to reading this book for so long, and unfortunately I was disappointed. The narrative is so confusing! For the first 75% of the novel I was struggling to make sense of what was going on. It is one thing to try to create suspense, but it is entirely another thing to leave the reader in suspense of what is happening for over half of the book! Only towards the end did the novel start to become more descriptive in what was actually happening and who all the people were.

An engrossing thriller that consists of two tales - one set in modern day France and one in medieval France. The two female protagonists seem to share a spiritual connection of some kind.. The story is basically another one about the search for the mythical holy grail of Christianity and as just that is not an extraordinary one. The real worth of this book lies in it's development of the two female characters and it's tight interweaving with the history of the region it is set in (southern France, ... Read More

This is not a light-reading fiction novel. There are at least 2 story lines being told simultaneously from beginning to end, and about 20 named characters you have to keep straight (i guess about 10 main characters). However, with its complexity it is quite enjoyable, and you just might learn a few french and occitan words along the way. There are more moments of frustration than success, leaving the reader with a slightly negative feeling... Like how the evil Oriane kills Guilhem and her husband, ... Read More

This book was a very good read, I couldn't put it down. Kate Mosse has also written Sepulchre which is equally good.

This book was a very interesting take on the Grail Legend; however, I think that this book could have been 5 star and was only 3 star. The plot could be plodding at moments. There are two linear stories followed through the book. The story of Alais in 1209 and the story of Alice in 2004. I personally think that the stories may have been told more effectively by telling first the 1209 story and then the 2004 story, as opposed to jumping back and forth. Also, I found that the climax of the story ... Read More
