The Man Who Inspired the World's Fastest-Growing Religion
Muhammad presents a fascinating portrait of the founder of a religion that continues to change the course of world history. Muhammad's story is more relevant than ever because it offers crucial insight into the true origins of an increasingly radicalized Islam. Countering those who dismiss Islam as fanatical and violent, Armstrong offers a clear, accessible, and balanced portrait of the central figure of one of the world's great religions.
Amazon.com Review: Muhammad was born in 570 CE, and over the following sixty years built a thriving spiritual community, laying the foundations of a religion that changed the course of world history. There is more historical data on his life than on that of the founder of any other major faith, and yet his story is little known.
Karen Armstrong's immaculately researched new biography of Muhammad will enable readers to understand the true origins and spirituality of a faith that is all too often misrepresented as cruel, intolerant, and inherently violent. An acclaimed authority on religious and spiritual issues, Armstrong offers a balanced, in-depth portrait, revealing the man at the heart of Islam by dismantling centuries of misconceptions. Armstrong demonstrates that Muhammad's life—a pivot point in history—has genuine relevance to the global crises we face today.

First, I have not read much about Muhammad before. I have read works on the Arab world and Islam, but nothing really on the Prophet. So, I don't have much context for evaluating how accurately this book depicts the life of Muhammad. The author, Karen Armstrong, begins by observing (Page 18): "We must approach his life in a balanced way, in order to appreciate his considerable achievements." That said, here are my reflections on this work.
The story of Muhammad is little known until ... Read More

this biography was a good introduction for people who want to know more about islam and or about its founder muhammad. it was a very interesting read, filled with excerpts from the koran and from early muhammad biographers. it is not an in depth study of islam, but rather a stepping stone to a little bit better understanding. i would recommend reading this book with an open mind as well, as the issues covered in it may seem controversial to our present time. it really made me think about islam in ... This book does a number of things for the reader. It shows the Prophet as a man who was concerned about his people and wanted to bring peace to his region. It shows that the Prophet was just another normal man who had disagreements (with his companions Abu Bakr and Umer), made mistakes (the satanic verses) and yet tried his best to make sure that the best of the society was achieved.
Some of the details of the times, like having multiple wives or authorizing raids on caravans, are hard for our ... Read More

It would be too much to expect that the founder of any of the world's major religions could be understood from one book, even at the introductory level (not counting sacred scripture, direct exposure to which may be essential). Consider Christianity, consider Buddhism. In the U.S., especialy after 9/11, it may be especially difficult to understand the life of Muhammad. Even before 9/11, even from the early times of Islam, Christian sources were critical of Islam and Muhammad. It is difficult to get a ... Read More

Karen Armstrong, noted religious historian, writes here her second biography of the prophet Muhammad, this time with the explicit intention of combating the rampant Islamophobia of the West.
I knew almost nothing of the prophet before reading this book, and so Armstrong's is a welcome (if not scintillating - she can be a bit dry) introduction. I appreciated the historical and cultural context she placed him in, the stories from his life, and her non-condescension towards the spiritual. ... Read More
